Consumer trims of both robots — the R1 Basic and the entry G1 — are remote-control machines: no Python, no ROS 2, no SDK, ever. If anyone in your lab intends to write code for the robot, the real comparison is R1 EDU from $15,950 versus G1 EDU — and at that point the deciding factors are payload, battery, and whether your research toolchain expects LeRobot or Isaac GR00T (G1 only).
