The R1 Basic is a demonstration robot. It has an 8-core CPU, no ROS 2, no Python, no SDK, and there is no path to add them after purchase. It is the right buy for an outreach cart, a lobby, or a filming rig, where students watch the robot rather than program it.
If the syllabus says students will program the robot, the purchase starts at the R1 EDU Standard. Every EDU tier carries NVIDIA Jetson Orin compute (40 TOPS on the Standard, 100 TOPS on Smart and Pro) and the full ROS 2, Python and C++ SDK. Every R1 ships with the robot, one battery, one charger, the remote controller, a transport case and, on EDU models, the SDK. What is not in the box is exactly what a classroom consumes: additional batteries, safety hardware, and spare parts. The warranty runs 8 months on the Basic and 12 months on EDU units (verified August 19, 2026), which matters for a fall purchase that has to survive a full academic year.
The R1's 6000mAh battery is quick-release and hot-swappable, and it delivers roughly one hour of bipedal operation per charge. A two-hour lab section with a queue of student groups cannot run on one battery per robot. The labs we track typically run two or three per unit.

Two things worth noticing before the request goes to the purchasing office. First, the spares rows together add about six percent on top of the three robots, so there is no budget reason to leave them off. Second, the gantry has no published US price at the moment (the listing stopped showing one on August 26, 2026), which is why our quote desk treats it as a quoted line rather than a listed one. Ask for it in writing on the same quote as the robots.

At 121 to 123 centimetres tall and 25 to 29 kilograms, the R1 is sized for standard classroom furniture. It works at desk and table height, fits through ordinary doors, and two students can lift it into the transport case. That is a real advantage over full-size platforms for a teaching lab that shares a room with other courses.
