What the R1 EDU Smart is

The EDU Smart is the configuration we point most research buyers at. For $18,900 it carries an NVIDIA Jetson Orin module at 100 TOPS — enough to run vision models and small language models on the robot rather than streaming to a workstation — plus the full ROS 2, Python and C++ SDK, a 2-DOF articulated head for gaze and human-robot-interaction studies, and a 12-month warranty. The frame is the standard R1: 121–123 cm, 24 DOF, binocular cameras, hot-swappable battery.

Why this tier rather than the ones either side of it

The EDU Standard at $15,950 is the same robot with 40 TOPS and no articulated head; the EDU Pro ladder above runs $19,800 to $32,900 and every step of it buys hands — grippers, five-finger bionic hands, tactile sensing — not compute. Tactile hands cannot be retrofitted, so if a manipulation project needs them, buy them up front; if it does not, the Smart is where the capability-to-cost curve turns. The R1 Basic at $8,990 cannot be programmed at all and is not a substitute at any price.

This is the configuration page for the Unitree R1 EDU Smart. Every other configuration, the full specification tables and the price history are in our Unitree R1 guide. Prices shown are dealer-listed prices read from that configuration’s own product page, not manufacturer MSRP, and they are re-read automatically every day; the date above is the last reading.
